What does Trump’s reelection mean for the future of Ukraine? Interview with Der Standard

In an interview with the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard, IFSH arms control expert Dr Ulrich Kühn analyzes various future scenarios for Ukraine following Donald Trump’s re-election. The designated US president has announced his intention to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. According to Kühn, the goal of negotiations must be a secure peace. But what options are available? Achieving a majority in the German Bundestag for Ukraine’s NATO membership would be difficult. This outcome would also be unacceptable for Russia, Kühn explains. Additionally, bilateral security guarantees, European peacekeeping forces, or nuclear armament of Ukraine are being discussed. However, Kühn considers these options unlikely as well. He considers the so-called “Israeli model” as somewhat more realistic, which would entail long-term military cooperation and rearmament of Ukraine by Europe.
