Presentation of Research Results at the UN Headquarters in New York

IFSH Researchers at the Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force in 2021, prohibiting its member states from producing, possessing, using, and threatening to use nuclear weapons. At the end of November 2023, representatives of the 69 member states gathered at the United Nations in New York to discuss the status and future of the treaty. In addition to member states, other countries attended as observers, including Germany. The five-day conference concluded successfully with a joint declaration.

Two IFSH researchers from the research area Arms Control and Emerging Technology, Franziska Stärk and Dr Moritz Kütt, participated in the states meeting.

Since March 2023, Dr Moritz Kütt has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the Treaty. During the meeting, the group presented a comprehensive report on the status of nuclear weapons and associated risks, the effects of nuclear weapons, and the current state of research on disarmament. In a special thematic session, Dr Moritz Kütt also presented results of his research to all state representatives. Franziska Stärk attended the conference as an observer and conducted interviews for her dissertation project on intergenerational justice and nuclear weapons.
